Don’t ever enter the Amazon Break Through Novel Award if you’re prone to anxiety. The contest starts with 10,000 entries in March and whittles them down through a series of cuts to one grand prize winner. The names of the five lucky semi-finalists in the Science Fiction/Fantasy/Horror/Kitchen Sink category were announced today.
The horror! The eBook horror!
At last year’s Ad-Astra Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Convention, I went to the eBooks panel and was surprised to find only two of the five panelists in attendance. Even more bizarre, there were only three audience members, including moi. I thought that was weird given that mystery conventions around the same time were having packed panels on eBooks.
I’m happy to report that this year there are a few panels that give a nod to the eBook industry, but I still sense a conservatism, a reluctance to accept change. For instance, one panel is Now What: How to Get an Agent, How to Query, and Publishing Options.
Here’s the description:
Book written, and now what do you do? Just what does one do to get an agent? How necessary is an agent? Join our panelists and learn some effective ways to navigate what comes after. How are you going to get someone to READ your book, what options are available for getting your book to your potential readers.
What surprised me about the description is the lack of reference to eBooks. In fact, this panel would fit very well in the program book of Ad-Astra 1995 or even 1985.
Then I thought of the agent or publisher query letter of the future, or as I like to call it: now. It goes like this:
Dear Agent or Publisher:
My novel was downloaded over 2000 times in the last month on Amazon. It has earned over 80 five star reviews and 150 likes. I am currently in the market for a print publisher to take this novel into the bookstores.
But my wife has an even better query letter. It goes like this:
Dear Author:
I notice that your novel is currently at 433 in the Amazon Best Sellers Rank, which indicates that you must be selling 30 0r 40 eBooks per day. I also see that it has been well received by readers, earning over 80 five star reviews and 150 likes.
I’d be very interested in representing your novel for print and movie rights.
That’s right. Her theory is that even as we speak, smart agents are trolling the Amazon Best Sellers Rank looking for talent.
Last month my vampire novel, Apocalypse Revolution, was downloaded over 2000 times, but a big chunk of those were promotional freebies on free days. I did earn three five-star reviews and a bunch of likes, but I’m not expecting New York to come bashing down my door just yet. However, with each new review, with each new reader, I’m building a following. Fans e-mail me now and I e-mail back. I’ve started a mailing list to help promote book two when it comes out in June.
If I’m good and I’m lucky, perhaps by next year I can write the agent query letter of the future. But if my wife is correct, they’ll write me.
Author Barry Eisler shocked the publishing world when he walked away from a $500,000 deal with St. Martin’s Press so that he could self-e-publish his next John Rain novel.
Now Eisler’s tacked the other way, signing with Amazon’s new mystery/thriller imprint Thomas and Mercer. Eisler says the advance was comparable to St. Martin’s except that the e-book royalties are significantly better. T&M will publish both print and digital versions.
Publishers are going to have to accept that offering authors a 25% royalty on e-books just isn’t going to cut it when they can get 70% from Amazon–especially when e-books never go out of print, so the contract could last until the novel goes into the public domain.
I’ve heard the argument that publishers simply can’t make enough to cover their overheads on e-publishing, and I sympathize, but times have changed. Publishers are going to have to find a way to lower their costs, because it’s not just John Locke’s 99 cent novels (or my anthology, or my novel) that will sink them. They’re going to start losing talent as well.
It’s getting interesting out there. We have agents like Richard Curtis now filling the roll of e-publisher, and retailers like Amazon launching print and e-pub imprints of genres like romance and mystery. It’s a strange new world when an author’s agent or his retailer can become his publisher.
What’s next? That’s the interesting part. Chaos. Opportunity.
If a publisher came to me and asked to represent my novel, promising to shop it around to other publishers, I’d be stunned. If the publisher went on to say that if they couldn’t sell it to another publisher, they’d put it up as an e-book on Amazon, collect the 70% royalty and give me half, I’d say that a serious conflict of interest existed.
Confused yet? Meet to the 21st century literary agent. More agents everyday are crossing the boundary between agent and publisher, and authors should be very aware.
Right now some agents are getting the e-rights to their clients’ out-of-print books and e-publishing those novels. At a conference I even heard one older author express delight at getting a 50% royalty on net sales from his agent/publisher. I didn’t have the heart to put my hand up and tell him he could e-publish it himself and get a 70% royalty.
Dean Wesley Smith has already written what many of us are thinking: how long before agents move on from the out-of-print novels and start putting up new work from their clients? Will they even shop a client’s novel around to see if a traditional publisher would pay big bucks? That’s a lot of work when the agent can just cash in on the client’s name right away by e-publishing his/her work.
It’s the Wild West in the e-pub world right now. Authors need to be very careful about what contracts they sign with their agents, and especially what rights they sell to the agents.
See where this is going? How long before authors need an agent to negotiate a contract with their agent/e-publisher?
If I were an established author with a back list, I’d cut the agent out right now.
Look out Sony e-reader, Nook and Kobo, because Amazon announced this week that Kindles are now on display and available for purchase at 3,200 Walmart stores. Since they’re already in Best Buy, Staples and Target, that means they’re everywhere, and they’re getting cheaper with the new ad version.
This can only be good news for authors, because once people get their hands on an e-reader, any e-reader, they’re going to want content–inexpensive content.
I know I keep repeating this, but so many good writers I know out there refuse to publish because they’re waiting for the brass ring and the pat on the head from a literary agent, a publisher and the adoring public in that order. A two year process at best.
So I’m going to try a little experiment. By this Friday, I hope to have crunched through all of the editor’s notes on my vampire novel. I want to publish it to coincide with the launch of the movie Priest, which as I posted before, has some very similar themes–walled cities, vampire armies and warrior priests.
I’ll keep track of how many copies of my e-book novel (and its sequels) that I sell in the next two years. There’s only one prediction I can make that I’m certain will come true: I’ll make more money and have more sales than my friends who have yet to get a literary agent to start their ball rolling.
My novel, In a Country Burning, has been pitched to eleven literary agents since 1999–six times by snail mail or e-mail, and five times face to face, eyeball to eyeball.
Of the traditional approach (query letter to an agent I’ve never met) I received one e-mail rejection in less than 20 minutes, which makes me wonder if it was on an auto-responder. The snail mail rejections took longer, although a few times I marveled at the efficiency of Canada Post, the U.S. Postal Service or the Royal Mail, depending on the destination. It was like a boomerang coming back way faster than anticipated, forcing me to metaphorically duck for cover.
I was initially flattered by Simon Trewin’s response from PFD in London, although I can’t help thinking of the agency’s name as an abbreviation of Personal Floatation Device. He’s since opened his own shop, which was probably a good idea.
He described my writing as “fluent” but declined because he “didn’t connect with the premise.” Okay, well that’s nice of him to say about the writing anyway. I’m fluent. Except I later read on a website that he has passed on other novels with that same rejection letter. It’s a form letter. Did he even read the sample pages?
That’s the problem with mail and e-mail. An author could believe their novel had been given careful consideration when actually he/she had been rejected by the receptionist before morning coffee.
That’s why I prefer to pitch face-to-face. They may never read the sample chapters, but at least I know they have a sense of the premise before they boot me out the door. Now I’m not advocating pounding on agents’ doors. I met most of them by appointment at conferences in carefully orchestrated pitch sessions. They knew I was coming and were prepared to listen.
So here’s what they said:

Beverly Slopen I pitched by accident. About three months after 9/11 I went down to her condo in Toronto to drop off the first 30 pages and query letter. I thought I’d be told to leave it with the concierge, which is why I had no qualms about bringing my one-year-old son along for the trip in his stroller. I was a stay-at-home dad at the time and figured the walk would allow him to get his morning nap.
I didn’t know that she had just returned from the Frankfurt Book Fair and was eagerly awaiting a package. She told the concierge to send me right up. She met me at the elevator.
Awkward. She was reaching for the envelope, saw my son and froze. “Oh, this is yours,” she said, as if she’d accidentally grabbed my half-eaten Big Mac. She didn’t wipe her hands off on her trousers after she handed it back, although it looked like she considered it. She politely allowed me a two minute pitch, and that was about all my restless son was going to allow too.
“I’m sorry,” she said. “I wouldn’t have any idea where to place it. Everyone’s doing a novel about Afghanistan now. Tom Clancy’s doing a novel about Afghanistan.”
Ms. Slopen let me down gently, the way you pass a crazy homeless person who is begging for change and raving about the coming apocalypse.
This is why I don’t recommend sandbagging agents at their offices. It puts them on the defensive. I sent her an e-mail apologizing for the intrusion, and she surprised me by responding, urging me to send the novel to other agents. She’s a class act.
Jack Scovil was interested in my mystery novel (which I’ve shelved for now) but never responded even though he had invited me to submit. He wasn’t at all interested in a novel set in Afghanistan.
Verna Dreisbach said she’d look at three sample chapters if I cut 30,000 words off the novel. I spent three torturous months slicing it down, but she still rejected it. What did I expect from an ex-cop who says on her website that she’s the editor of Why We Ride: Women Writers and the Horses in their Lives? My novel is just not going to excite her.
Stacia Decker of the Donald Mass agency wins the prize for asking the most intelligent questions about the novel. After careful deliberation during the interview, she invited me to submit the first ten pages. But she also set me up for the rejection that followed two months later. She asked me how many agents I’d pitched this novel to, and when I said ten she shook her head. “You’ve hardly dipped your toe in the water then.”
Which brings me back to publishing online. An agency takes 15% of the meager royalties a publisher will pay to most first time novelists. They’re great at vetting contracts with publishers, but what if a writer decides to go without a publisher? No agent required. I know that going without a publisher or an agent (the 20th century model) is controversial. A couple of writers and my editor have already encouraged me not to give up on traditional publishing, but we’re in a new world with e-publishing. Maybe I’ll have to eat my words. That’s what’s fun about publishing right now. No one really knows where it’s going.
